John Lewis makes good start to second half

John Lewis sales climbed by 5.5% to £77.7 million year-on-year last week to mark a good start to the department store chain’s second half.

Fashion sales increased by 4.5%, driven by a strong performance in the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category. Both menswear and womenswear achieved uplifts on the corresponding week last year, growing by 8% and 4.2% respectively. New fashion lines for Autumn/Winter performed particularly well.

Home sales rose by 5.8% as the textiles and home accessories category enjoyed strong growth. Bedroom furniture also had a positive week.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales rose by 6.9% boosted by an 11% increase in vision sales. The retailer also saw an uplift in sales of premium cameras as customers prepared for their summer holidays.
