Silvia Fresno Monfort: Trust must underpin payments innovation

Payments innovation must serve a clear purpose: making life easier for customers without compromising security or trust. For Silvia Fresno Monfort, head of enterprise marketing at Worldline, that principle also defines effective marketing. In this interview with TRB, she explains why customer understanding, commercial alignment and creative clarity must work together to build lasting relationships.

As payments technology evolves, what must remain non-negotiable in the customer experience?

Security and trust must underpin every stage of the customer journey. Technology, society and payments have changed significantly over the past 20 years, and that pace creates both opportunity and uncertainty. We cannot predict precisely where the market will go next. We can, however, be clear about the principles that guide us: however the experience evolves, customers must be able to trust it.

For marketing, the starting point is understanding the customer’s perspective. In a crowded market, visibility alone is not enough. We need to test our approach, learn what resonates and communicate why we matter to the people we want to reach. The priority is not simply a larger audience, but relevance to the right audience.

What does being customer-led demand of Worldline in practice?

It demands a detailed understanding of each customer’s needs and a sustained commitment to supporting them. That means listening carefully, investing time in the relationship and working towards shared success. Trust is earned through that ongoing commitment, not through a statement of intent. Over time, it provides the foundation for loyalty and a lasting relationship.

How do you ensure creative marketing supports a clear commercial strategy?

Commercial alignment comes first. We develop our marketing strategy with our sales and go-to-market teams, working closely with product marketing. That shared direction gives creativity a clear purpose: defining the right message, expressing it with precision and finding compelling ways to bring the brand to market.

Collaboration and creativity are complementary. A coordinated approach provides consistency; strong writing, visuals and fresh ideas give the brand distinction. I particularly enjoy finding the angle or expression that makes a message connect. Whether through content, design or a new channel, the aim is to strengthen the brand and make the people and expertise behind it visible.

What should retailers expect from their payments partners as the market develops?

They should expect innovation and the agility to help them adapt. Retailers must continue to develop their offer while making the experience easier for their customers. Payments partners have a clear role in supporting that progress.

At Worldline, we see our role as helping customers access innovative payment technologies so they can better serve the people who buy from them. Innovation must make that experience easier. Trust and security are not separate considerations; they must remain integral to how payments develop.
