Intu to offer 4G mobile broadband in shopping centres

Shopping centre owner Intu has signed a partnership with Wireless Infrastructure Group to install networks to support 4G services in its UK shopping centres.

Intu Trafford Centre will offer its shoppers the superfast mobile broadband from this summer as Everything Everywhere becomes the first operator to go live on a newly developed network. The service will then be rolled out to Intu’s other shopping centres.

Trevor Pereira, commercial director at Intu explained: “Mobile shopping has risen by over 50% compared to a year ago, but we know that shoppers can be put off and frustrated by slow speeds and lost connections. By offering our shoppers 4G we are further breaking down the division between online and offline shopping and giving our retailers a really exciting opportunity to engage with their shoppers, interacting with them at every level.”

Scott Coates, CEO at Wireless Infrastructure Group said: “The network we have developed at Intu Trafford Centre will enable EE to provide shoppers with a transformational mobile experience.  Working in partnership with Intu we have built a single network that can support all mobile operators and are delighted to be launching it with EE to bring 4G mobile to shoppers.”

The move follows Intu’s free WiFi roll out launch last week at Intu Trafford Centre as part of its £8 million digital infrastructure investment plan.
