The online fashion retailer said the notification was sent to ASOS customers at around 10am on Tuesday.

ASOS said it is investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms that it uses to communicate with customers.

It said in a statement: “We took immediate action to restrict access to the notification platforms and are working with our internal and external specialist advisers, as well as all relevant authorities.“

ASOS admitted that some basic personal information, including names and contact details, might have been accessed, but added that it does not believe that payment card information or account passwords have been affected.

It added: “Our website and app are operating as normal, with no current disruption to any aspects of our operations. Customer trust is incredibly important to us, and if the situation changes an update will be provided as appropriate.”

ASOS said it has cyber security insurance in place with a large global provider, including business continuity cover, but added that it was too early to quantify any potential impact on trading.
