More closures at Clinton Cards

Administrators of the failed Clinton Cards and Birthdays chains have confirmed that a further 122 stores are to close.

The greeting cards retailer fell into administration last month after its biggest supplier, American Greetings, bought up the company’s £35 million debt and then called it in.

American Greetings has since bought 397 of the group’s branches thereby saving 4,500 jobs.

Last week administrators Zolfo Cooper shut 43 of the Clinton and Birthdays stores not included in the  deal and have now announced the closure of a further 122 stores, resulting in the loss of around 880 jobs.

The administrators are still looking for a buyer for the remaining 122 stores which will continue to operate as normal.

Prior to its administration, Clinton had nearly 800 stores across the UK and employed more than 8,000 people.
