Schuh closes website following ‘conflicting’ advice

Following the shuttering of its stores due to the coronavirus pandemic, footwear retailer Schuh has said it will close its website temporarily from 26 March due to “conflicting advice” from the UK and Scottish governments.

In a statement, Colin Temple, Schuh chief executive, said: “At this point in time, the UK Gov guidelines include that online retail should ‘still open’ and ‘is encouraged,’ along with advice that if staff cannot reasonably work from home, they should continue to go into work.

“However, with the Schuh head office and DC operations based in Scotland and Scottish Gov advice conflicting with UK Gov advice, Schuh management have made the decision to close their website, in addition to their stores that already closed from the evening of Sunday 22 March.”

Schuh said a number of distribution centre staff members have said they would like to continue working within its warehouse to support the online business. However, the company has decided that the website  will remain closed until there is updated  advice from both governments.
