Waitrose welcomes new wine buyers
Waitrose has appointed two new wine buyers to its wine buying team, both of whom are Masters of Wine.
Liam Steevenson will join Waitrose early next month and will be responsible for buying wines from Australia, Burgundy, New Zealand and France. Having previously worked at Majestic, Bibendum and Armit Wines, Steevenson is also the founder of independent wine merchant Red & White which he has been running for the last nine years.
In a second appointment, Xenia Irwin will take up the position of buyer for multi-channel beers, wines and spirits for Waitrose Wines Direct on 4 December. With over 20 years experience in the wine trade, Irwin has previously worked as an independent wine consultant, as well as for St Austell Brewery Company and SPAR. Her most recent role was commercial manager at ABS Wine Agencies.
The news coincides with the departure of Matt Smith and Maria Elener's internal move to take on responsibility for wines from Italy, South Africa, Loire and Eastern Europe.
Waitrose head of beers, wines and spirits buying Pierpaolo Petrassi said: “It’s a hugely exciting time for our team at the moment. Matt has had six very successful years at Waitrose and we wish him the best of luck. We're looking forward to the fresh energy and pace that the two new members will bring to the team.”
