Waitrose to supply food to Eurostar trains

Waitrose has signed a deal with Eurostar to supply food and drink to all of the high-speed rail operatorÂ’s Standard class buffet cars.

The partnership, which will see Waitrose sandwiches, snacks and ready meals served on all Eurostar services from 30 April, marks Waitrose’s first major move into on-board food. It will also be the supermarket’s first significant move into Northern Europe as it looks to expand its business-to-business and export activities.

The new Eurostar bar buffet selection will include more than 20 Waitrose products including both hot and cold options from sandwiches, ready meals and salads through to fruit juice, cakes and snacks.

Waitrose business-to-business director, David Morton, said: "This is a very exciting opportunity for us to work with such a prestigious brand, which shares our commitment to quality and service. To be the first food brand that Eurostar’s customers experience when they are visiting Britain is tremendously powerful as we seek to expand our presence within Northern Europe."

For Eurostar, the deal follows a number  of recent upgrades to its on-board catering which includes the appointment of Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc as culinary director for its Eurostar Business Premier menus.

Julian Welham, head of on-board services, at Eurostar explained: "The on-board dining experience is an integral part of our passengers’ travel experience, and our new partnership with Waitrose will bring our customers the highest standard of refreshments whilst on the move. Our British passengers will be well acquainted with the Waitrose brand, but for many of our continental customers this will be their first experience and we look forward to introducing them to the new range which includes both French and British classics."

In the year ending January 2013, Waitrose grew its export business by more than 20% and now supplies food to 45 worldwide. It also operates five branches in the Channel Islands, and has nine shops in the Middle East in partnership with Fine Fare Food Market LLC.

New countries that Waitrose has begun supplying in 2013 include Gibraltar, Trinidad, Ibiza, the Bahamas, the Philippines and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
