Waitrose sees surge in popularity of English wine

Waitrose has said that English wine is proving to be a drink of choice in it stores in 2012 as sales soar in time for a summer of sport and Jubilee celebrations.

The grocer  has seen an enormous surge in the popularity of still English wine, sales of which are up 92% year-on-year, as consumers gear up to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London 2012. English sparkling wines are also selling well, with sales in the last four weeks up 17% year-on-year.

Andrew Shaw, Waitrose English Wine buyer explained: "English wine producers have worked tirelessly over last ten years to reach an unparalleled level of investment in this country's vineyards and their potential for excellent quality wines. We now rival not only the highest quality sparkling wines in the world but we also produce a diverse range of red, white and rose wines. It is so exciting that we can look forward to toasting a whole summer of British events with a truly homegrown tipple."

Waitrose offers over 40 different English still and sparkling wines and  also has its own vineyard in Hampshire, which is due to produce its first bottles in 2014.
