Waitrose sales fell by 0.6% year-on-year last week as the supermarket’s performance was impacted by a period of major promotional activity during the same period last year.

Flowers proved a big hit as the Waitrose horticulture range experienced its best ever Valentine's Day week with total sales up by 19%. While Valentine's bouquets were up by 39% overall, the best-selling bouquet was the 'upper class Waitrose Foundation dozen roses' bouquet priced at £29.50.

Champagne and sparkling wine made up seven of the 10 best-selling lines in the week up to Valentine's Day on Waitrose Cellar, with champagne sales surging by 319% year-on-year and sparkling wine sales rising by 271%.

As shoppers prepared for half term and days out, 'Food to Go' sales rose by 16% while sales of ponchos and umbrellas also saw big increases. In addition, sun cream sales were up 41% as shoppers prepared for holidays abroad.

Meanwhile, Chinese New Year boosted sales of items such as rice vinegar, oyster sauce and dark soya sauce.

During the week, it was announced that Waitrose had scored top marks in the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare. Some 80 companies were assessed and Waitrose was ranked as a global leader in providing consistently high standards of animal welfare.
