UK shoppers to spend seven times their weekly grocery budget on festive food

A new study has found that UK shoppers will spend an average of £166 per person on their Christmas groceries.

This is seven times more per person than the average weekly spend of £23.34 on household food and drinks according to ONS figures.

The research from shopping and fundraising platform Give as you Live has revealed that men are likely to spend more than women with an average spend of £177 per person on food compared to £154 for women.

London and Bristol were found to be the biggest Christmas food spenders with a respective spend per person of £199 and £188. In contrast, shoppers in Nottingham and Norwich were found to have a more modest spend with residents of both cities forking out an average of £122 per person.

According to the study, some 44% of UK shoppers said that supermarket Christmas adverts encouraged them to buy their festive food items at a different grocery store to their usual outlet. The research also questioned shoppers on what inspires their weekly shopping list and found that online recipes, TV cookery programmes, and videos on Facebook and YouTube were the top sources of inspiration.

Give as you Live surveyed 2,000 British consumers on their grocery shopping habits in October 2018.
