Timberland appoints UK fashion designer Christopher Raeburn as creative director

Timberland, the US clothing and footwear brand, has announced that British fashion design Christopher Raeburn, has become its global creative director.

Raeburn will be working closely with Timberland’s global product, marketing and innovation teams to create a collection of footwear, apparel and accessories, with his first full collection being for autumn/winter 2020.

Jim Pisani, global brand president of Timberland, said: “Timberland has a strong foundation in craftsmanship and innovation; now it’s time to elevate our brand vision through the lens of design.

“Christopher Raeburn is a true visionary, who shares our ethos of responsibility and brings to the table a fresh, modern design sensibility. Together we will really push the boundaries of where Timberland can go as a brand, and we’re excited to get started.”

Raeburn will split his time equally between his own label ‘Christopher RÆBURN’ and Timberland. Based in his London studio, he will travel frequently to Timberland’s global headquarters in Stratham in the US as well as to its offices in Switzerland and Hong Kong.

Timberland said Raeburn’s design ethos of ‘Remade, Reduced, Recycled’ complements its own commitment to make products responsibly and increase its use of recycled, organic and renewable materials.

Raeburn has recently collaborated with Timberland on a capsule collection that was shown at this year’s London Fashion Week. The range of outerwear, trousers, shirts and t-shirts has now been launched in Timberland stores and online.

In line with his ‘Remade, Reduced, Recycled’ philosophy, Raeburn scoured street markets and second-hand shops to find vintage Timberland items that he then deconstructed and remade into contemporary pieces for the runway collection. The pieces then served as inspiration for the capsule range with each item incorporating a range of eco-conscious materials including organic cotton and recycled PET.

Raeburn said: “I see an incredible opportunity for Timberland to break out and put responsible, innovative design at the centre of the brand’s creative strategy. It’s an exciting moment to join forces with Timberland.”
