Tesco to offer free Wi-Fi in-store
Tesco is to offer customers Wi-Fi services in its stores. The free internet service, enabling wireless connection to the internet for laptop and smartphone users, is being trialled in four of the supermarkets branches and if successful will be rolled out elsewhere.
The new service means customers will be able to compare prices and read product reviews online as they shop. Mike McNamara, Tesco’s chief information officer, said shoppers are already using mobile technology to compare whether the supermarket’s prices are competitive.
McNamara said: “You can stand Canute-like and pretend nothing is happening or you can say it’s happening and I am going to help it happen.”
He added: “My guess is it will go in all stores.”
Tesco already uses Wi-Fi in its own in-store operations so the amount of investment required will be minimal. If rolled out to all 2,700 Tesco stores, the service will significantly expand the number of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK.
