Tesco to improve and extend store in Cardigan
Tesco has been granted planning permission to extend and modernise its existing store in Cardigan, Wales creating around 60 new jobs.
The store, which has been trading for 15 years, will be increased by 15,000 sq ft to create a total net sales area of 45,000 sq ft.
Improvements will include wider aisles, more tills and a new customer cafe. A decked level car park will increase parking spaces and enhance access and safety for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. The retailer will also introduce a range of environmentally friendly features such as sustainable timber and glass panels to reduce the store’s carbon footprint.
Tesco said it hoped the improved store would encourage more of the towns’ residents to shop locally and help boost the vitality and viability of the nearby town centre.
Sophie Akokhia, Tesco corporate affairs manager said: “Tesco Property is committed to working with communities for economic benefits and we firmly believe that the store extension will boost the vitality and viability of Cardigan through investment, regeneration and new jobs."
Tesco was forced to revise its original plans substantially to meet the County Council’s development brief and the needs of the Cardigan community, following feedback from local residents, retailers, community groups and councillors.
Akokhia added: “We are now looking forward to improving our store and giving our shoppers the very best that Tesco can offer.”
