Tesco to cut night shifts and trading hours at some stores

Tesco is making changes to the way it operates 69 of its stores as it looks to further improve the shopping trip for customers. The move will involve cutting night shifts for shelf stackers and reducing some store opening hours which will affect around 3,000 staff.

The plans will also include eight of the stores reducing their trading times from 24 hours to 6am to midnight.

Last year, Tesco announced that it was closing time on 24-hour trading at 76 stores. This also involved simplifying the way the stores were run. It has now said the changes have made “a real difference”.

In this latest move, the supermarket will be moving from night-to-day replenishment in 69 stores, with eight of those stores reducing their trading hours down from 24. Tesco is also bringing together different service desks so that customers can get everything they need in one place.

Where similar changes have been made, Tesco said it has started to see the benefits which has led to freeing up more time for staff to focus on service and ensuring stores are at their best at the busiest times.

Tesco UK and ROI chief executive Matt Davies said: "We're committed to improving the way we serve our customers and this week have discussed making further changes in a number of UK stores with our colleagues.

"These changes will help us run these stores more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers. We appreciate these changes will impact the roles of some of our colleagues and we will work with them to ensure they are fully supported throughout this period.”

Tesco will look to implement the changes over the coming months.

The stores changing from 24 hour opening to 6am to midnight opening include Galashiels Extra, Holyhead Extra, Ilkeston Extra, Kilmarnock Extra, Falkirk Grahams Road, Folkestone, Edgware Road Metro and Worksop.
