Sainsbury's to launch Million Meal appeal
Sainsburys will be holding a meal appeal in its supermarkets this coming Saturday with the aim of collecting enough food to contribute to 1 million meals for those suffering from food poverty.
Customers are being invited to take part in the appeal by adding an item to their shopping basket from the retailer’s meal appeal shopping list and donating it in the FareShare trolley after checkout.
Sainsbury’s is partnering with FareShare on the project. FareShare is a UK-based charity that provides quality food to a network of community-based organisations such as homeless shelters, day centres for the elderly and breakfast clubs for vulnerable children. The retailer has donated surplus food to the charity for the last 17 years.
Customers will be greeted front of store by Sainsbury's staff and volunteers and given a meal appeal shopping list asking them to donate either tins, dried pasta, instant coffee, rice or tea. These items will then be collected and distributed to FareShare either by Sainsbury's or its logistics partner Allied Bakeries.
All of the food collected by FareShare will be redistributed through its 17 depots to 700 organisations in the UK.
