Sainsbury's opens 'milestone' Scottish store

Officially opened by Keith Brown MSP and Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe, the 6,800 square foot shop in Glasgow’s Gordon Street has created 64 new jobs.

Sainsbury’s opened its first store in Scotland in 1984 and now operates 35 Scottish supermarkets and 65 convenience stores employing over 9,000 people. It also employs a further 1,000 people at its Sainsbury’s Bank headquarters in Edinburgh.

Coupe said: “We’re delighted to reach this milestone. Our business in Scotland is diverse and growing and we are continuing to innovate so we can offer our customers greater convenience, flexibility, speed and choice to shop with us whenever and wherever they want. We’re looking forward to building on the success of the last three decades.”

Sainsbury’s is planning to open six new convenience stores in Scotland over the next 18 months.

It is also looking to launch new Argos shops at Hawick, Blackhall, Hamilton and Dundee and transform 10 standalone Argos stores into the retailer’s new digital format.
