Sainsbury's general merchandise sales reach £1 billion milestone
The news follows the supermarket’s best ever Christmas when sales of clothing and homewares grew by a third compared to the previous year.
In the last year, the supermarket’s small electrical sales grew by 21% year-on-year with 17,000 tablets sold over the Christmas trading period. TVs were also popular with over 86,000 sold, the equivalent to one every minute in December and January.
Sainsbury’s said that the business had the potential to carry on growing beyond the £1 billion sales milestone, as it continues to expand in both size and scope; growing within the store portfolio and benefiting from the introduction of new products and ranges.
Roger Burnley, Sainsbury’s managing director for general merchandise, clothing and logistics, added: "We’ve invested in getting our general merchandise offer right for customers over the past few years and reaching £1 billion in annual sales shows this has been worth it.
"We know that customers who buy from our non-food range spend more with us overall and the fact that we are still able to expand the range to even more stores shows the huge potential for Sainsbury’s."
