Retailers among UKs best work experience providers
Several retailers have made it to the shortlist for this years National Council for Work Experience Awards in recognition of the quality of their work experience provision.
John Lewis has been shortlisted for three awards - ‘Best Employment Experience as Nominated by a Careers Advisor’ following a nomination from Manchester Metropolitan University, ‘Best Large Organisation offering Long-term Placements for More than 20 Students’, and ‘Graduate Internship of the Year for Large Organisations’. The Co-operative Group and Lidl will compete for the ‘Best Large Organisation offering Long-term Placements for Fewer than 20 Students’ title.
The shortlist has been drawn up from hundreds of entries which have been assessed against a scoring system incorporating student support and skills development as well as business benefits. Around five finalists have been selected in each of the award’s 13 categories.
For the final stage of judging, the shortlisted entries will be reviewed by a panel representing the full internship process, including last year’s winner Jagex, the National Association of Student Employment Services, an intern, and university placement tutor. The winners will be announced on Tuesday 19 March at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London by Timpson chairman, John Timpson.
Sophie Adams, manager, recruitment at John Lewis said: “Last year we won the Highly Commended Award in the Best Newcomer category for our Retail Industrial Placement scheme, so we’re delighted to have been shortlisted for a second year running. Internships have become an integral part of our business and each year a number of previous interns are successful in securing places on our graduate programmes.”
Mike Hill, chief executive of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, which operates the NCWE added: “This year marks our tenth anniversary and it has become more difficult to shortlist due to the increasing number of high caliber entries and limited finalist places. Each entry goes through an extremely rigorous judging process, so huge congratulations to all those who have made the final cut.”
