Retail Trust and VInspired give NEETS the chance to shine
The Retail Trust, the charity that looks after the needs of people working in retail, has partnered with youth volunteering charity VInspired to launch a 12 week skills development and volunteering programme for young people who want to develop a career in the retail sector.
Open to young people in England between the ages of 16 and 25, the Retail Ready People scheme will help them to enter or progress in the retail sector by offering them the chance to set up and run a high street pop-up shop in ten high street locations across England between 2012 and 2014. The first two locations confirmed for 2012 are Brighton & Hove and Enfield.
Retail Trust and VInspired are asking all retailers operating in Brighton and Enfield to invest in their employees by encouraging them to apply for the free programme.
The charities have now started the recruitment process to find 30 young volunteers per location, made up of retail staff and 16-25 year olds not in employment, education or training. Those young people taking part in the scheme will undertake a series of training workshops before transforming empty shops into creative retail spaces at the heart of their communities.
Nigel J L Rothband, chief executive of Retail Trust, said: "Brighton and Enfield have a fantastic mix of young people and retailers. I would urge retailers big and small to show support for their employees’ development and get involved in Retail Ready People. Encourage your staff to apply, give them a chance to shine, gain new skills, confidence and the opportunity to bring those new found skills back to your business.
"We’re also requesting landlords to donate an empty retail unit in Brighton and Enfield from 1 October -12 December 2012 to help the young people transform empty units into engaging and creative pop-up spaces which will engage the local community."
Terry Ryall, CEO of VInspired added: "VInspired, quite simply, gives young people the opportunity to do good things. Retail Ready People will create important opportunities for unemployed young people to become Retail Ready and make a positive difference in local communities starting with the young people of Brighton and Enfield."
