Pick n Pay appoints Richard Brasher as CEO

South African grocery retailer Pick n Pay has appointed Richard Brasher, the former head of Tesco UK, as its chief executive.

Brasher will take up his new role on 1 February 2013 taking over from  deputy CEO Richard van Rensburg and chairman Gareth Ackerman who are jointly running the business in the interim period.

Ackerman said the company was "extremely fortunate" to have secured Brasher adding that his experience would stand him in good stead across all major areas of the Pick n Pay business.

"Richard has a singularly impressive track record,” said Ackerman. "We are delighted he has agreed to join us as Pick n Pay’s new CEO. The executive search was exhaustive. Given his background, experience, expertise and array of innovative achievements, he was the natural choice."

Brasher added: "Pick n Pay is a dynamic, innovative business, with a proud and impressive history. I'm both excited and honoured to be joining the company at an important time in its development and believe there is a lot I can offer with my experience in the retail market."

Brasher stood down as CEO of Tesco UK in March after over 25 years with the business.
