One in four football fans plan to buy new TV ahead of European Championships

Despite the current squeeze on household finances, around four million football fans are planning to buy a new TV ahead of the European Championships according to new research.

A survey by shopping website VoucherCodes.co.uk has revealed three quarters of consumers will be following Euro 2012 at home with almost one in ten planning to purchase a new TV for the occasion.

VoucherCodes.co.uk said the findings are reinforced by its analysis that showed a 30% increase in traffic from savvy shoppers looking for discounts on TVs over the past week.

The research revealed that UK consumers will spend an average of £570, more than enough to purchase a 42 inch 3D TV, while 13% plan to spend over £1,000. Around a third of those surveyed said they will cover the cost with a credit card. However, nearly half of consumers said this was a planned purchase for which they had been saving for some time.

Commenting on the findings Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk said: “Over the last few years we have noticed demand for TVs rising sharply ahead of major sporting events. We’re expecting the two weeks before the championships to be a very busy period for Britain’s retailers as consumers look to pick up a bargain ahead of the Euros.”
