New Matalan store brings hope to Trowbridge
A new Matalan store in Trowbridges Spitfire Retail Park attracted over 1,000 applicants for 85 available jobs with locals queuing outside the store from 7.30am on the day that applications opened.
This follows a similar rush for jobs at a new Asda store in nearby Melksham when 1,000 people applied 275 jobs in just two weeks.
The arrival of the 25,500 sq ft store was welcomed by Trowbridge Mayor Clive Blackmore who said: “This is just what Trowbridge needs right now. The joy of it is that it is creating jobs, it is giving people more shopping choice, but it is also not too close to the town centre for that to be affected by it.”
Local people In Trowbridge are said to be worried about the jobs market following announcements from Virgin and Vodafone that they would be closing their operations in the town.
