New App helps shoppers find out more about UK supermarket meat
A new app has been launched which helps shoppers to find out food provenance information on the meat they buy in supermarkets.
The free android App 'Where’s This From' provides food provenance, animal welfare and hygiene standards information on cuts of meat and mince. Using publicly available data published by the UK Food Standards Agency, the App tells shoppers the name, location and activities of approved slaughterhouses and cutting plants which are in the last stage of the supply chain to UK supermarkets. Shoppers can also see all the different types of meat handled by an operator.
In addition, the App also shows the level of compliance of an operator with FSA standards for hygienic production and animal welfare. This allows shoppers to see whether an operator is the "best in the class" for compliance or if they "could do better".
Shoppers use the app by picking up the packet of meat or mince they are about to buy, find the four-digit code on the EU Identification mark on the packaging, then type it into the search screen of the App to find out the information relating to that product.
Available on Android, there are also plans to extend the App to iPhone.
