Mountain Warehouse enjoys record festive sales

Mountain Warehouse, the outdoor clothing and equipment retailer, has reported record Christmas trading with sales rising by nearly 12% to £84.7 million in the 13 weeks to 6 January.

In addition, the retailer had a record Black Friday with online sales passing £1 million on a single day for the first time in its 21-year history.

Best selling items included socks, fleeces, winter jackets and gloves.

Mountain Warehouse operates 340 stores in nine counties and is looking to increase its store portfolio to 400 over the next 12 to 18 months. It opened seven new UK stores in the period in Wells, Romsey, Kendal, St Neots, St Ives, Deal and Tavistock. It also launched new stores overseas in Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Canada.

Mountain Warehouse has recently opened a customer services centre in Coventry and is planning to launch a new facility in Poznan in Poland to support its European store opening programme.

Commenting on the Christmas performance, Mark Neale, Mountain Warehouse founder and chief executive, said: “The prior year’s performance was exceptional due to the cold weather and widespread snow we saw in the run up to Christmas 2017. I’m therefore really pleased to report this year’s strong performance despite the unusually mild weather we have been experiencing.

“This puts us well on course for another record year and as a result we are continuing to invest in more stores, new territories and our online business.”
