McColl's completes contactless roll-out
The technology allows customers to make payments in store using debit and credit cards with contactless capability, as well as via Android Pay and Apple Pay on their smartphones.
The roll-out, which began in August 2016, was carried out at a rate of 100 stores per week.
Dave Thomas, chief operating officer of McColl’s, said: “In an increasingly digital retail environment, we wanted to offer our customers the option of contactless payment, and we are delighted by the response, with a third of all credit card transactions already coming via this method in our stores.
“We developed the initiative to meet a clear customer demand for contactless and it will help us to capture more customer spend as we continue our expansion in the convenience sector.”
UK consumers spent a total of £2.3 billion in August 2016 using a contactless card, according to the UK Cards Association. This was an increase of 270% year-on-year.
