Lidl to close stores early if England makes the World Cup final

Lidl UK has pledged to adjust its store opening hours this Sunday if England reaches the World Cup Final.

The retailer said its stores in England will open early at 9.30am for browsing and close an hour before kick-off at 3pm to enable customers to stock up before the start of the big game.

Christian Härtnagel, chief executive of Lidl UK, said: “As the official supermarket of the England Football team, we absolutely believe it’s coming home, which is why we are planning to close stores an hour early, and take part in what we hope will become a day of national celebration.”

The supermarket has also reported having its highest ever footfall during the tournament as football fans visit the stores for supplies. With both the World Cup and Wimbledon finals happening this weekend, it is now preparing for more high footfall.

Lidl became the official supermarket of the England Football team in 2015 as well as the official supplier of water, fruit and vegetables.

Having established itself in the UK in 1994, Lidl now has 710 stores and 12 distribution centres in England, Scotland and Wales.
