Biggest reindeer in the UK installed in shopping centre
The structure at Metrocentre, Gateshead stands as tall as a house and weighs 600Kg – the weight of two fully grown elephants. Made from more than 2,000 metres of aluminum, the giant Reindeer is adorned with 10,000 festive fairy lights.
Designed and built by North East company, Centre Design, a team of engineers have been working through the night for 5 days to put the yet unnamed structure in place.
The impressive structure which stands in the Town Square area of Metrocentre is thought to be the largest Reindeer in the UK, if not the world. Visitors are invited to name the reindeer for a chance to win a trip to Lapland.
Karen Carr, marketing manager at Metrocentre says: “We have been working on the theme of this year's Christmas decorations since January and this is the first time we have seen the reindeer at it's full height as the Town Square is the only place big enough to put it on show – it looks incredible!
The Reindeer is the focal point of Metrocentre’s festive decorations which range from giant baubles and parcels to stars and Metrognomes.
Karen Carr says: “Each mall has a different theme and we have chosen a scheme that is both contemporary and traditional, to appeal to the thousands of visitors who will be arriving at the centre over the coming months - we are confident that the decorations won't disappoint.
“Teams have been working through the night for a week to put all of the decorations in place but I think that it is well worth it for the result.”
Strictly Come Dancing 2008 Champion Tom Chambers will officially launch the decorations on Wednesday 17th November, from 6.00pm.
