John Lewis weekly sales down 3.2%
John Lewis said bedding, linens and cushions were in high demand as shoppers prepared for visitors at Christmas. Other items selling well included Kindle e-readers, fragrances, toys, handbags and Christmas gift foods and decorations.
Commenting on the figures, Lesley Ballantyne, director of operational development, said: "We are pleased to see a strong uplift in week-on-week sales albeit at a slower rate than last year.
"Momentum would no doubt have been greater if it wasn't for the unseasonably mild weather, but we have put in a strong performance nonetheless."
John Lewis said that more than two million people viewed its latest Christmas advert on Youtube, with many customers hailing it the "best ever".
