Electrical and home technology sales increased by 14.4% as the retailer enjoyed solid sales growth in small and large appliances, televisions and cameras.

Fashion recorded a 7.9% rise. Childrenswear was one of the best performing categories with sales up by 24.7%. Menswear and womenswear also saw growth as the cooler weather encouraged customers to buy from the autumn collections.

In the home directorate, sales edged up by 3% with stand out categories including beds, gift food ranges and new Christmas assortments.

Online sales at johnlewis.com jumped by 22.7% as all three buying directorates benefited from strong traffic on mobile and the main website. Click & collect grew by 56% to become the fulfilment route of choice for customers.

In the shops, sales rose by 3.9% with two thirds of branches beating last year. Milton Keynes led the way with sales rising by 19.6%.

Simon Russell, director of retail operations development at John Lewis said: “The next few weeks will be key to complete the final preparations for the important seasonal peak for Partners across the business. So far, we seem very well placed to delight customers with an inspiring assortment and a first class experience in our shops or online.”
