John Lewis sales up 5.6% last week
Despite unseasonably mild weather, John Lewis ended last week with sales up 5.6% on the same week in the previous year.
Swindon and Peterborough were among the best performing branches with sales rising by 18% and 8.2% respectively. Online also contributed to the increase with strong growth of 19.7%.
At the directorate level, fashion sales climbed by 10.4% year-on-year as a price match promotion drove sales of men’s brands and womenswear. Non-price match brands also benefited from the halo, as did the retailer’s own-brand assortment.
Home sales grew by 4.6% as promotions across living and dining, bedroom and upholstery contributed to strong growth in furniture sales.
Electricals and home technology sales edged up 2.8% boosted by a strong week for small electrical items.
Mark Felix, director of trade at John Lewis, said: “We are now into November and our focus truly turns to Christmas. Our customers are starting to get into the spirit, with online searches for advent calendars last week up +219% against last year.
“This is when it gets exciting for both customers and Partners. We can all play our part by providing our customers with unforgettable shopping experiences at this unique time of year.”
