John Lewis sales up 5.9% last week
Footfall was up in the retailer’s stores while online sales achieved the highest year-on-year increase of the current half to finish 39.5% up.
The sunshine helped fashion sales to rise by 19.8% as sales of pick-up women’s accessories surged by 60.6% driven by strong trade in sunglasses.
In the home directorate, where sales dropped by 0.4% overall, furniture put in a good performance with a 5.3% increase. However, the best performing category was outdoor living where sales soared by 117% year-on-year.
Electricals and home technology sales edged down 0.7% although electrical products had a strong week with sales up 5.6% on last year.
Online had its best week of the half, taking 31% of all assortment sales. Fashion was the top performer online, driven by good availability and price matching. Mother's Day gifting pushed online accessories and beauty sales up 123% while home and electrical and home technology also performed well, with sales rises of 20% and 28% respectively.
Jon Williams, director of merchandising operations at John Lewis, said: “Warm weather and Mother's Day gifting combined with price matching drove good sales growth of 5.9% on last year. This was particularly pleasing when you consider we were up against good numbers on the run up to Good Friday.”
He added: “With the blue skies feeling like they are here to stay (for a few days at least!) and the school holidays upon us we are well set for the all-important Easter trading weeks.”
