John Lewis sales up 5.3% last week
John Lewis increased its sales by 5.3% year-on-year last week with a particularly strong performance at its At Home stores.
Electricals and home technology was the leading directorate with sales up 11.4% on the year. There were healthy sales of communications technology items which were boosted by new releases from Apple and Microsoft. Mobile phone sales continued to drive sales in technology, with the new Samsung S6 popular among customers.
Home sales were up 6.4% driven by buoyant sales in gift ranges and furniture, particularly big ticket items such as upholstery.
Despite the weather driving a 246% uplift in umbrella sales, fashion sales were down 1% on the year. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure had a good week with sales up 4.7%, as did menswear which posted a 6.3% uplift.
