John Lewis sales up 15.7% last week

The arrival of cold weather and the last throes of the clearance sale helped John Lewis to grow its sales by 15.7% to £85.9 million last week.

The department store chain said its shops had a particularly strong week with Ashford, Poole, Peterborough, Stratford and Glasgow achieving some of the biggest percentage increases.

Sales online at johnlewis.com climbed by 30.8% and there was double-digit percentage growth across all of the assortment areas.

Fashion sales increased by 16.2% year-on-year as customers bought both seasonal and the new season's lines. Sales in the electricals and home technology category climbed by 19.7%. Home sales ended the week up 11.9% on last year, with particularly strong results from furniture.

David Barford, director of selling, group L & S at John Lewis, said: “Our Clearance has now officially ended and exciting new lines are starting to arrive in shops and online.”
