Warm weather depresses sales at John Lewis
Sales at John Lewis for the week ending 8 October were subdued as the warm weather depressed trade at stores in the South East.
The best performing stores were in the North and Midlands. Sales in Glagow were up 6.6% on the same week last year and the Leicester store achieved an increase of 4.9%.
The retailer's newest stores in Stratford and Chester both saw trade increase from the previous week. During the week, John Lewis opened its latest At Home shop in Tamworth.
Electricals and home technology sales were up 5.6% helped by sales of tablet computers. However, fashion and home sales were both down by 0.6% and 1.2% respectively.
Online sales at johnlewis.com increased by 13.4%.
Maggie Porteus, head of selling operations for new format at John Lewis commented: "As I write these comments, the week has started with a strong double-figure flourish on Sunday and our customers are showing all the signs of getting into the Christmas shopping mode. Availability of stock in our shops is at an all-time high and we're now all set for the run-up to Christmas."
