John Lewis competition will put one aspiring musician on Christmas Day TV

John Lewis is to give one aspiring music artist a Christmas they will never forget.

Launching today on YouTube, the  ‘Reworked’ competition encourages members of the public to record a version of the soundtrack to the retailer's new Christmas advert. The winning entry will then be used to soundtrack a special edition of the advert that will be aired on Christmas Day.

John Lewis’s hotly-anticipated Christmas campaign was unveiled during The X Factor on Saturday 9 November. It features the animated story of best friends Bear and Hare at Christmas, set to a cover of Keane’s 2004 hit, ‘Somewhere Only We Know,’ by Lily Allen.

‘Reworked’ calls on up and coming singers and musicians to upload videos of their version of the Keane track at youtube.com/JohnLewisRetail. The winner, who will be chosen by a panel that includes Keane, will be given an all-expenses paid trip to London where they will record the track in a professional studio with the producer of Lily Allen’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ cover, Paul Beard.

The recording will then feature in a 90-second version of the advert which will be shown live on ITV1 on Christmas Day.

Craig Inglis, marketing director at John Lewis, said: “In previous years we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people sending and uploading their versions of songs from our Christmas ads. This year, with the support of Lily Allen and Keane, we want to give someone a Christmas they’ll never forget - the chance to hear their song on our advert on Christmas Day. Absolutely anybody can take part - we’re really looking forward to seeing the entries come in!”
