John Lewis reports strong start to Black Friday

John Lewis has reported that early indicators suggest that this year’s Black Friday is on course to be one of its busiest ever shopping periods.

It said the busiest time so far has been between 8am and 8.30am as people shopped on their way into work. The company is also taking five orders every second at johnlewis.com.

Sales through mobile phones saw a particular increase with a 21% spike between 8am and 9am.

The most popular products so far include the Sonos Play 1 with one selling every ten seconds. Other best selling products include the Lego Simpsons house, Marc Jacobs perfume and Sophie Conran crockery.

All John Lewis shops opened their doors at 8am this morning and some shops will stay open later than usual.

The John Lewis online Black Friday event will run until midnight on 28 November.

Dino Rocos, lead director and operations director, John Lewis said: “Sales on johnlewis.com exceeded expectations overnight as customers logged on to take advantage of our great Black Friday deals. We expect traffic to continue to the website today but for customers who prefer to visit one of our shops they will open earlier than usual at 8am. Over the weekend we expect to see the usual pattern of trade resume as customers head to our 48 shops."
