John Lewis sales up 2.8% last week
John Lewis said it put in a solid performance last week with sales rising 2.8% year-on-year.
Fashion sales climbed by 17.2% as trade was driven by price matching activity and growth in non-promotional areas. Some of the best percentage increases came from menswear, women's shoes, handbags, and premium beauty. Swimwear and nightwear also had stand-out results.
Home sales edged up 0.3% boosted by good performances in outdoor living and gifting.
Meanwhile, electricals and home technology sales fell by 9.3%.
Looking at the shops, some of the best results came from the Exeter, Poole, Ashford, Liverpool and Peter Jones stores. Online sales performed well, rising by 17%, as price matching activity boosted fashion sales.
Tim Harrison, director of store development at John Lewis, said the retailer had started this week well and had made the most of the May bank holiday. He added: “With the election this week, many will have had their eyes elsewhere, but now is the time to refocus our customers on our fantastic offer.”
