John Lewis mid-week Christmas trading update
Store sales uplift and strong online trading for the Group
For the week ending Saturday 18th December, sales were up 7.4% for the same week in 2009 and up 24% for the same week in 2008.
Commenting on the first four days of this week's trade so far (to end of Wednesday 22 December), Andrew Murphy, Retail Director for John Lewis, said,“Despite the continuing challenges from the weather in some areas of the country, this week has seen a pleasing uplift in in-store sales and continued strong performance online. For Sunday to Wednesday we are 4.3% up on last year. As expected, some trade has migrated from our online channel to our shops, following the cut off for pre-Christmas deliveries, making for a fantastic atmosphere in our branches across the UK.
“In particular, last-minute purchases in lingerie, beauty, jewellery and watches have been very popular with male customers, with many taking advantage of advice from our expert Partners to ensure they get the perfect gift - no doubt reassured by our no-quibble approach to returns in the event that their judgement is still slightly out!
“As the shops serve their final pre-Christmas customers on Friday evening, our website will be gearing up for Clearance which begins online at 5pm on Christmas Eve. The shops follow early on the morning of 27 December and we’re planning for our biggest ever clearance sale with up to 50% off thousands of lines from fashion to furniture and accessories.”
Simon Russell, Head of Multi-Channel and Joanna Brazier, Multi Channel Programme Director, both at John Lewis, will be speaking at the Retail Bulletin’s 2nd Multichannel Summit 2011, sponsored by k3 retail,February 2nd. To find out more, click here.
