John Lewis makes solid start to new trading year
John Lewis has reported making a Â“solid startÂ” to the new financial trading year with sales rising 4.9% year-on-year last week.
In the week ending 1 February 2014, online sales at johnlewis.com increased by 20.3%. Simon Russell, John Lewis’s director of retail operations development, said website traffic was strong, especially from mobile devices, and there were also improvements in conversion.
In the shops, the At Home stores performed particularly well with the Poole, Tamworth, Swindon and Chichester branches all enjoying double-digit sales growth.
Electrical and home technology led the three buying directorates with sales climbing 6.8% as trade was boosted by strong sales in audio, imaging, vision and electrical appliances.
Home sales grew by 4.6% driven by buoyant trade in beds and dining, while fashion sales edged up 3.2% following good performances in childrenswear and menswear.
Russell added: “New stock in all assortments continues to arrive in volume, transforming the look and feel of both the website and shops. There is definitely a hint of spring in the air!”
