GENERAL MERCHANDISE

John Lewis enjoys superb Easter

John Lewis said it enjoyed “superb” trading in the week leading up to Easter as the poor weather towards the end of the week drove customers to its stores.

Sales for the week ending 13 April 2011 were up 27.5% compared to the same week last year and up 25% on Good Friday Week last year.

The employee-owned retailer said the majority of its branches delivered double-figure increases with Leicester topping the table with an uplift of 42%, followed by Bluewater at 37% and Trafford at 33%.

There were also double-digit uplifts from all three buying directorates with electrical and home technology leading the way with a 59% increase on the same week last year. Demand for the new iPad3 was strong while Vision sales were up 83% as shoppers in London and the south of England prepared for the Digital Switchover.

The fashion directorate achieved an 18% increase in sales helped by a 33% rise in sales of children’s shoes as parents prepared for the return to school. Sales of premium beauty products were also strong, up 32%, helped by a competitor price matching exercise and promotional activity. In the Home directorate sales increased by a healthy 16%.

Online sales at Johnlewis.com rose 39% on last year with all the directorates performing well. Electricals and home technology was the best performer with an uplift of 65%, followed by Fashion at 33% and Home with a 17% rise.

David Barford, director, selling operations, Region B at John Lewis said: "All in all it was a great week and a fantastic start to the Easter weekend on Friday and Saturday. Here's looking forward to us continuing to delight our customers in to the spring and beyond."
