John Lewis ends trading year with 'solid' week of sales

John Lewis said it rounded off its trading year with a “solid” sales increase of 4.8% last week.

Fashion achieved the biggest year-on-year percentage rise with sales climbing by 9.1%. The stand-out performer was childrenswear although womenswear and handbags also saw buoyant sales.

In the home directorate, sales rose by 7% helped by a “cracking” week in furniture.

Meanwhile, electricals and home technology had its best week for some time although sales edged down 0.4%

Online sales at johnlewis.com increased by 18.7%.

John Lewis managing director Andy Street said: “Last week continued the pattern we have seen since Christmas, providing a solid sales increase of 4.8%. This was rooted in online and a combination of the Fashion and Home directorates. It rounded off another strong year for sales, which have been nicely ahead of the market, and reflects the role shops and online are playing supporting one another.”

Looking at the shops, those achieving the biggest percentage increases included Chester, Ipswich and Cardiff.
