John Lewis celebrates best week for sales
In the week ending 8 December, online sales reached a record £42 million, £7.3 million of which was taken on 'Mega Monday' on 3 December.
The colder weather in the week boosted fashion sales as customers bought coats, scarves and knitwear. They also stepped up their gift buying for Christmas with toys such as Lego, scooters and App toys being particularly popular.
Gift food products also sold well while electronic items such as tablets, headphones, DAB radios and audio streaming continued to see major uplifts.
As customers readied their homes for Christmas, the department store saw strong sales of Christmas trees, decorations and tree lights. John Lewis branches throughout the country also reported significant increases in sales of bed linen, ready-made curtains, guest beds and lighting.
Andrew Murphy, John Lewis retail director said: "We are delighted to have achieved these new sales records, particularly in a market which is still economically challenging. It shows that customers trust John Lewis to deliver the perfect Christmas for their family and friends, whether it is finding the right gift or finding the right touches to decorate their homes.
"It is great to see a really festive buzz in our shops and all our Partners are focused on providing the levels of service and advice our customers expect from us, particularly at this key Christmas period."
