John Lewis sales up 3.9% last week
Sales at the John Lewis department store chain rose by 3.9% year-on-year last week as the cooler temperatures helped boost trade, especially in the retailer’s new season lines.
Electrical and home technology sales rose by 7.7% after ‘back to school’ promotions led to a 12.9% uplift in the communications technology category. Electrical products also had a good week due to strong demand for vacuum cleaners.
Fashion sales climbed by 4.3% as the womenswear category achieved a 6.3% increase in sales. The menswear category also performed well with sales rising by 5.7%. Meanwhile, sales in the childrenswear, nursery and haberdashery category were up 7.5% in the week.
However, home sales dropped by 1.1% despite a 3.5% uplift in the gifts, cook and dine category. Hydration products including water bottles were also popular with sales up 37%. The retailer said its new season own brand House range continued its good performance with sales up 27% compared to the same week last year.
