John Lewis sales up 1.7% last week
John Lewis saw its department store sales rise by 1.7% year-on-year last week.
Fashion sales performed well with an uplift of 8% in the week. Both the womenswear and menswear categories increased their sales with respective rises of 6% and 4.4% as shoppers bought from the new season’s ranges.
John Lewis said the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category had an exceptionally good week, with sales up 17.9%. This was driven by price matching through the retailer’s Never Knowingly Undersold policy.
Home sales fell by 2.1% in the period despite a good performance by the retailer’s own brand House range where sales climbed by 11.6%. Within the range, bedroom and bath products were particularly popular. Elsewhere, the upholstery category achieved an uplift of 10%.
Electricals and home technology sales were down 0.9%, although the small and large electrical categories both increased their sales on the same period last year.
