John Lewis sales up 1.4% last week

The John Lewis department store increased its sales by 1.4% year-on-year last week as the retailer benefited from cooler weather.

Fashion sales climbed by 7.6% as the change in temperatures encouraged shoppers to update their winter wardrobes. Sales in the womenswear and menswear categories were up 15.4% and 9.6% respectively.

Home sales edged up 0.8% as furniture and flooring sales rose by 3% on the same week as last year, The retailer also enjoyed strong sales of beds while cookshop sales increased by 9% due to the retailer price matching its competitors on a range of popular brands.

In contrast, electrical and home technology sales were down 3.8%, although there was strong demand for a number of new products such as the Dyson Airwrap which launched online and in the retailer’s shops last week.
