GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 0.9% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 0.9% year-on-year last week despite the unseasonably hot weather.

The electricals and home technology category had a strong week with sales up 9.9% year-on-year. The retailer saw customers snap up the new iPhone 7 in its shops and online, and headphones continued to sell well with an uplift of 101% driven by wireless headphones.

Home sales edged up 0.7% with ‘big ticket’ items putting in a good performance, particularly furniture.

Fashion had a tougher time and finished the week with sales down 8% as the September heatwave impacted sales of the new season’s ranges. Despite this, John Lewis said its new Modern Rarity label continued to power ahead and was among its best-performing womenswear brands in the week.
