John Lewis sales down 4% last week

John Lewis experienced a 4% drop in sales last week compared to the corresponding week last year.

This came despite strong sales of its own brand ranges which benefited from the launch of the retailer’s new brand identity in shops and online.

Fashion sales were down 3.9% in the week although the retailer said it saw very strong demand for its new John Lewis & Partners womenswear collection. Shoes were also popular with sales up 8% on last year.

Home sales fell by 7% despite a record week for the retailer's contemporary own brand House where sales were up 10.5%. Its new gifting range called ‘Find Keep Give’ also performed well, as did its new plant gift range ‘Little Botanicals’.

Electrical and home technology sales declined by 2.2% although gaming products put in a strong performance with a sales uplift of 231%.
