John Lewis sales down 2.2% last week
Sales at the John Lewis department store chain fell by 2.2% year-on-year last week as the heatwave continued to influence trade.
Fashion sales were down 2% although the warm weather clothing category put in a good performance with sales up 29% on last year. Menswear also had a good week with sales edging up 2.1%.
Home sales dropped by 7.8% despite a strong week in the outdoor living category where sales rose by 50%. The retailer’s bathshop put in a strong performance due to trade being boosted by a 28% uplift in sales of beach towels.
Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales climbed by 3.9%. The small electricals category had an exceptionally strong week with air purifiers, fans, and humidifiers all seeing triple digit sales growth.
