John Lewis saw sales at its department stores increase by 5.7% year-on-year last week as it benefited from shoppers purchasing Father’s Day gifts and taking advantage of a price matching promotion.

John Lewis sales boosted by Father's Day last week

John Lewis saw sales at its department stores increase by 5.7% year-on-year last week as it benefited from shoppers purchasing Father’s Day gifts and taking advantage of a price matching promotion.

Fashion sales were strong with an uplift of 10.9% as the womenswear category achieved sales growth of 11%. Within this, own brand womenswear sales climbed by 11.2%. The women’s accessories and jewellery categories also had good week with sales rising by 15.4% and 20% respectively. Trading in the menswear category was boosted by Father’s Day as sales rose by 19.7%. John Lewis said men’s socks were the most popular gift.

Electrical and home technology sales increased by 6.2% in the week as the retailer enjoyed strong sales of gaming products and TVs as customers prepared to watch the beginning of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 0.4% despite Father’s Day gifts being in demand within the gifts, cook and dine category which delivered overall growth of 3.6%. Outdoor living also continued to perform well with sales up 3.8%.
